KWK Kortrijk – CNT Tournai
This game would determine the leader of the competition after 5 rounds. CNT was leading with the maximum of points, Kortrijk could become at the same height, although they played one game less. The game was also a battle between the top 3 in the goal scorers standing. It was Mael Leseney, the current top scorer of CNT who opened the score. The equalizer followed only 18 seconds later: a penalty scored by Michiel D’hooghe. With 49 seconds to play, Jan Nel netted the 2-1. Michiel D’hooghe scored his second on of the evening for 3-1. Hector Droulez made sure CNT was staying in the game. After the 3-2, KWK netted three more goals, resulting in a 6-2 standing halfway. Michiel D’hooghe scored his second penalty for a 7-2 standing. The second goal of Mael Leseney resulted in a comeback of CNT, with a 7-5 standing after three quarters. Things got exiting when Guillame Kubat scored the 7-6. Another weekend, another hard game for WZK. The first 6 minutes they give the impression KAZSC could be matched, with a 2-3 standing. But Antwerpen managed three more goals in last two and a half minute, giving a 2-6 standing. WZK managed only 1 goal in the second quarter, KAZSC netted 8. Same playbook in the third quarter: 1 goal from WZK, 6 netted by Antwerpen. Last quarter was a 0-6 standing for Antwerp, resulting in a hard 4-25 result. Worth noticing is that 10 out of 13 players managed to score for KAZSC.

Tielt is still looking for their first points of the season and was hoping to make it a close game with MZV Eeklo. But luck hasn’t been on their side so far. Pretty early in the game they lost a key player with a broken nose and soon after a second player with 3 major fouls. Eeklo took advantage of that and was able to bring it home fairly easy. 8-14 was the final result.

Leuven Aquatics – RSC Mechelen (0-5, 0-5, 0-5, 4-6)
Mechelen was hungry after their loss to Mouscron 2 weeks ago and their postponed game from last week against Tielt. The first 3 quarters Mechelen made no mistakes in defense and played a very well controlled game in offence. Resulting in a 0-15. The last quarter Leuven was finally able to break through a couple times, finishing the game with a score of 4-21.

ROSC Ostend – ENL La Louvière (2-2, 2-3, 1-3, 2-2)
The youngsters from Ostend played a good game against ENL and were almost able to surprise the team of Kevin Chavepeyer. Ostend was able to take the lead in the beginning of the first quarter, but La Louvière always found an answer to come back. The second quarter it was ENL with the initiative, but twice their lead wasn’t enough to break ROSC. The 3rd quarter however, the wolves from La Louvière were finally able to get the lead they were looking for thanks to Numa Matthys and Logan Vitrant. Ostend Didn’t give in and kept on battling until the very. It wasn’t enough unfortunately, but a good result for the debuting team.

Another though weekend for WZK. ENL scored after just 30 seconds and netted five more in the first quarter. Same one-way water polo in the second quarter, resulting in 10-0 halfway. WZK managed to score on goals in the third and fourth quarter, but ENL scored 9 more. Final standing: 19-2

RDM Mouscron – MZV Eeklo
In the first half of the first quarter, both teams had troubles finding the back of the net. The next two minutes, RDM managed to score 4 goals in a little over 2 minutes. MZV scored the 4-1 in the beginning of the second quarter, followed by 3 goals of RDM. The last minute and 15 seconds of the second quarter were exiting, with 4 goals, 2 on each side, resulting in a 9-3 score halfway. The third quarter started like the second one: with a goal from Jonas Trenson. RDM scored 5 more goals, 14-4 after three quarters. Same story at the beginning of the fourth quarter: first goal socred by Jonas Trenson. RDM netted 4 goals in the remaining time of the fourth quarter, MZV one. Final standing: 18-6.

CNT Tournai – ROSC Oostende
Due to a malfunctioning game sheet, we don’t have many details. CNT booked his 4th victory with a 12-8 win, staying atop of the league. They played four home matches against the smaller teams. Next week we will know more about how far CNT can get this season with an away game against KWK Kortrijk, battling for the first place.
When the Covid pandemic hit Europe in 2020, all competitions were postponed or cancelled. In Belgium, like in a lot of countries, the federation decided eventually to cancel the competition completely and not to appoint any winner. Antwerp (AZSC) was steamrolling through the competition in the 2019-2020 season, and it looked like there was no opponent that year who would be able to match their level. Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t finish their great season.
2020-2021 started with a lot of doubt and uncertainty. The Belgian federation and clubs tried to start with the new season, but in the end, it was once again cancelled due to the Covid pandemic, and the strict measures imposed by the Belgian government.
Finally, 2021-2022 promises a lot of action again in Belgium and for now it looks like everything will proceed as normal. Most clubs were able to keep their team roster and are preparing to start again with competition on the last weekend of September or early october. Nevertheless, a lot of transfers happened in the last couple of months. Below we give a small summary of the incoming and outgoing transfers in the Belgian first division.
Antwerp (AZSC)
As mentioned before, Antwerp had a very good season in 2019-2020, but unfortunately couldn’t finish their it with a price. Since then, there have been a lot of changes on the team. The biggest loss for Antwerp was without a doubt their center forward, Toni Opacak. After the 2019 season, Toni left the club for the Croatian club VK Osijek. Another great miss will be one of their key players, Greg Heirman who retired.
For the upcoming season AZSC invested in a lot of young talent, Pieter-Jan Dhooghe (WZK) joined the team together with Luka Pannecoecke (ROSC), both Belgian youth internationals of the U19’s squad. Head coach Jorn Dams stepped down and was replaced with a new Spanish coach, Luis Ramón Lalinde Sanches.

Club Natation de Tournai who have been regular contestants for the title and/or Belgian cup in the last couple of years will probably know a more difficult season in 2021. The club near the French border are investing into new and upcoming youth players.
3 key players left the club or retired. Kevin Sterling returned to France, after only a single game played in the 2020 season due to Covid. The strong center forward went back to his former club of CN Noisy le sec. Furthermore, Gregory Moronval and Nicolas Golejewski retired. Tournai was able to convince 2 young talents (only 17 years old) to join them. Hector Droulez joined the club again after playing in France for ENT Tourcoing’s youth selections and Maël Leseney who comes from Douai.

The last couple of years Kortrijk has been a steady team in the top 5 of the Belgian competition with very few transfers. The 2021 season is no difference with no new players joining or leaving the club.
La Louviere (ENL)
ENL started the 2020 season with a new head Coach Kristjan Sundic, but never got the chance to see what the Croatian coach could bring to the team. Kristjan Sundic now took on a new challenge as assistant coach for the Belgian national team. He got replaced by Kevin Chavepeyer, former player of La Louviere who retired after the last (Covid) season.

Mechelen has been busy on the transfer market in Belgium as well. Last year they already had a couple of new younger players added to their team roster, but also experience with a talented Croatian and former player of Jug Dubrovnic, Nikola Pavlicevic. Now they can add 3 more experienced players. Vladyslav Dulin (23) coming back to his former club after playing 3 years in Stade de Reims (FR), Simon Van der Jeugt (24) who played for 2 years with Polar Bears Ede and Sammy Claes the 34 old captain of the national team who also played in the Dutch league last season with PSV.

Moeskroen (RDM)
RDM is the last official Belgian champion (2018-2019), which was their 10th title in the club’s history. In the last 10 years Moeskroen won the competition 6 times, so we can expect a lot of them again for the coming season.
Last season RDM had some great arrivals but weren’t able to keep them after 1 year without competition. Since then, Matthieu Almuzara decided to retire and Christos Papapostolou left the club again for a different adventure.
However, Mouscron was able to make all the necessary arrangements and complete the process for Iranian refugee Amir Dehdari to be eligible to play. A 28-year-old lefthander who played for the Iranian national team.
Furthermore, RDM convinced some younger players to join the squad. 21-year-old Rodrigo Silva, Guillaume Wartelle-Hugues, a 22-year-old goalkeeper and 20-year-old Nathan Quoirez.

The 2020 season was supposed to be their reappearance in the first division after 13 years, unfortunately Ostend never really had the chance of proving themselves. For the 2021 season ROSC lost one of their young talents, Luka Panncoucke (18), to AZSC Antwerp. Luka will try to earn his place with the 2018 Belgian champion. As the newest member of the Superleague Ostend will probably have a tough season with one of the youngest squads of the competition.

Tielt (TZK)
TZK had been a steady newcomer in the Super league the last couple of years. Working slowly but surely towards a better position in the competition, but still battling every year to stay in the highest league. A difficult first task for MZV on their first gameday in the Olympic swimming pool Wezenberg. Antwerp with the home advantage and supporters in the stands again, had an explosive start. Captain Niels Bus scoring the 3-0, lead the team to a 5-1 score after the first quarter. Jonas Trenson was able to take the 0 of the board for MZV. The second quarter was nearly a copy of the first, Antwerp kept widening the gap from 5-1 to 8-2. Niels Bus and youngster Pieter-Jan D’hooghe scoring their 2nd of the day. This quarter it was Tuur Damman who was able to find the net again for MZV.
The 3rd quarter looked promising for a moment for MZV. Tuur Damman scored his 2nd of the day for 8-3 and although Jay Van Hoey scored his 2nd for AZSC as wel, it was Michiel Heynssens who brought MZV a little closer again with 9-4. Remarkable, because Michiel usually is the goalie for MZV. But Antwerp never gave the momentum back to MZV and continued to control the game towards the end of the 3rd quarter, finishing 12-4. The last quarter was just more of the same. Worth to mention, also 19yo Luka Pannecoucke, who made his debut in the Super league, also made his first goals for Antwerp.

No surprise either in the game between Leuven and Kortrijk. KWK took the lead in the first quarter and never got into trouble during the rest of the game. Both Niels van der Linden and Michiel D-hooghe were in good shooting form and got 6 goals each.

Despite quite some players leaving the team, WZK put in a more than decent effort, trailing ROSC with only one goal after the first quarter (2-3). The second quarter Oostende shifted a gear or two higher, 3-8 at half time. The second half of the game the difference between both teams was much smaller, resulting in 2-3 in the third quarter and 2-2 in the final one. End standing was 7-13

Mouscron started furious, scoring 4 goals in the first quarter, where ENL wasn’t able to score. After three minutes in the second quarter, the game seemed already over, as Mouscron was leading with 7-0. Halfway the second half, ENL was able to score the first one, quickly followed by a second one. 8 seconds before half time Amir Dehdari scored the 8-2. In the third quarter both teams managed to score 2 goals. The last quarter was for Moucron again, with 4-2, resulting in the 14-6 final standing.

Communicatie nationale sportcommissie over het vervolg van de competitie
De federale overheid heeft op vrijdag 27 maart de beslissing genomen om de genomen maatregelen tegen de verspreiding van het Coronavirus met minstens twee weken te verlengen, met de mogelijkheid om de maatregelen nadien nog eens twee weken extra te verlengen. Hierdoor ziet de nationale sportcommissie waterpolo zich genoodzaakt om het verdere verloop van het Belgisch Kampioenschap definitief te annuleren. Dit omdat de gezondheid van spelers, trainers, scheidsrechters, officials en supporters momenteel onze prioriteit nummer 1 is.
Concreet betekent dit dat er dit seizoen geen wedstrijden meer georganiseerd zullen worden. Hierdoor wordt er nergens een kampioen uitgeroepen en zullen er ook geen ploegen promoveren of degraderen. Voor alle seniorenploegen zal desamenstelling van de afdelingen voor het seizoen2020-2021 identiek zijn aan die van het huidige seizoen. Indien er ploegen zijn die gedurende het seizoen gemerkt hebben dat het niveau van hun huidige divisie te hoog of te laag gegrepen is, kunnen ze een verzoek indienen bij de sportcommissie om te veranderen van divisie. Let wel op: er dient op volledig vrijwillige basis een overeenkomst gevonden te worden tussen de betrokken clubs. De sportcommissie zal geen enkele club verplichten om te degraderen of promoveren of een uitzondering toestaan op de competitieformule van 10 ploegen per divisie.
Wat de bekerfinales betreft, zal er gekeken worden om deze in te plannen voor de start van de nieuwe competitie, afhankelijk van hoe de richtlijnen met betrekking tot het organiseren van evenementen de komende maanden verspoeld worden.
Op vlak van deelname aan Europese bekers, zullen wij advies inwinnen bij de LEN. Afhankelijk van dat advies zal de sportcommissie in dialoog gaan met de clubs die interesse hebben om deel te nemen aan de Europese bekers.
Ten slotte raden wij aan om alle richtlijnen van de overheid te volgen. Hoe sneller we dit virus kunnen inperken, hoe sneller we kunnen terugkeren naar ons normaal (polo)leven.
Stay safe en vergeet zeker niet om voldoende te bewegen, het nieuwe seizoen zal er snel genoeg terug zijn!
De competities zijn aan de laatste speeldagen toe. We zitten in de laatste rechte lijn naar de play-offs. Welke ploegen zijn al zeker van hun plaats? Voor welke ploegen wordt het nog knokken? Een overzichtje.
In de Superliga is enkel Moeskroen al 100% zeker van een plaats in de play-offs. Met 33 op 33 staan ‘Les Dauphins’ nog steeds autoritair aan de leiding. Kortrijk en Antwerpen volgen op respectievelijk 9 en 12 punten. Kortrijk ontvangt nog La Louvière en Mechelen in de resterende 2 competitiewedstrijden. Antwerpen heeft nog 4 wedstrijden te spelen, allemaal in het eigen Wezenbergbad. Voor het 4de plaatsje in de play-offs komen er nog 3 ploegen in aanmerking. Mechelen en La Louvière delen de 4de plaats met elk 16 punten na 11 wedstrijden. Beide ploegen hebben quasi hetzelfde programma. Mechelen speelt nog in Antwerpen, in Brussel en in Kortrijk. La Louvière speelt thuis tegen Brussel, trekt nadien naar Kortrijk en naar Antwerpen. De 3de ploeg die in aanmerking komt, is promovendus Eeklo. MZV telt momenteel 13 punten uit 12 wedstrijden. Er rest MZV nog een verplaatsing naar Moeskroen en een thuiswedstrijd tegen Doornik.
In tweede nationale zijn de 4 ploegen voor de play-offs gekend. Gentse, Wase, Oostende en Tielt zullen binnenkort onderling om de titel strijden. Gentse staat momenteel nog aan de leiding. Voor de Stroppen staan er nog wedstrijden tegen Antwerpen B (thuis), Calypso (uit) en Wase (thuis) op het programma. Wase staat 2de met 1 punt minder dan GZV. Wase heeft nog 2 thuiswedstrijden, tegen Aalst en Waregem, en een verplaatsing naar Gent te goed. Oostende is na de zege tegen Gent genaderd tot op 2 punten van de leider. De West-Vlamingen hebben nog 2 verplaatsingen voor de boeg. Ze spelen nog in Tielt en in Leuven. Tielt tot slot speelt dus nog thuis tegen Oostende, maar ook in Antwerpen en thuis tegen Calypso. Het beloven dus nog spannende weken te worden. Ook onderaan het klassement is het spanning troef. Calypso, Mons en Aalst tellen respectievelijk 9, 8 en 6 punten. Er staan nog enkele onderlinge duels op het programma, dus dat worden belangrijke wedstrijden in de degradatiestrijd.
In derde nationale staat Hasselt A nog steeds afgetekend aan de leiding. Met 46 punten uit 16 wedstrijden gaan de Limburgers al zeker als leider de play-offs in. VZ Gent volgt op 10 punten, Merksem op 13 punten. Volgend weekend kijken Merksem en VZ Gent elkaar in de ogen. De 4de ploeg in de play-offs wordt Strombeek. De Brusselaars tellen momenteel 31 punten. Wat opvalt in het klassement is dat de kloof tussen plaats 6 en plaats 10 slechts 3 punten is. La Louvière B en Seraing tellen elk 13 punten, Eupen en Helios elk 12 en hekkensluiter Ixelles 10. Ook hier staan er nog enkele onderlinge duels gepland. Welke ploegen kunnen zich redden? Antwoord binnen enkele weken.
In vierde nationale loopt de competitie door tot begin mei. Brugge staat aan de leiding met 39 op 39. Mechelen B en Moeskroen B volgen op 10 en 11 punten. Ciney staat momenteel 4de met 20 punten, gevolgd door Oostende B (19), Hasselt B (18) en Ensival (17). Soignies bezet de 8ste plaats met 15 punten. Dendermonde is 9de met 14 punten, Genk 10de met 12 punten. Hekkensluiter Blankenberge telt 3 punten. De West-Vlamingen konden dit seizoen nog maar éénmaal winnen, thuis tegen Oostende B.
Dit weekend werden de kwartfinales van de Beker van België A afgewerkt. Afgelopen week werd La Louvière aangeduid als gastheer voor de halve finales en de finales van de drie bekercompetities. Welke ploegen konden zich verzekeren van een ticketje voor de halve finale? Een overzichtje
Landskampioen Antwerpen ontving zaterdagavond Brussels. Antwerpen geeft van bij het begin het tempo aan en scoort al snel tweemaal, via Kevin Vervoort. Dan zien we een tijdje geen doelpunten maar Antwerpen herpakt zich op het einde van het eerste kwart en scoort nog drie keer. Eenmaal via Nick Poelmans en tweemaal via Vervoort. Laatstgenoemde zal er uiteindelijk 7 maken. Ook in het tweede kwart stoomt Antwerpen door. Aanvoerder Niels Bus met de 6-0, Nikola Jakiç scoort de 7-0 vanop man meer. Na een time out scoort Poelmans de 8-0. Ennis Numanovic prikt eenmaal tegen voor Brussels. 8-1 is de stand halfweg. In het derde kwart scoort Poelmans al snel de 9-1, maar Brussels prikt tegen via Michael Missault. Via doelpunten van Jakiç, Heirman (2x), Poelmans en Vervoort staat het na drie periodes 14-2 in het voordeel van de Sinjoren. In het laatste kwart blijft Antwerpen voluit gaan. Vervoort en Heirman diepen de voorsprong uit tot 17-2. Ook youngsters Sam Materné (U17) en Oskar Maksymiuk pikken hun goaltje mee in deze ruime zege. Het slotakkoord is voor Brussels. Numanovic zet de 21-3 eindstand op het bord. Antwerpen overtuigend naar de halve finale.
De tweede kwartfinale was een duel tussen MZV Eeklo en bekerhouder Mechelen. De bezoekers openen de score via Sven Publie. MZV reageert via Florian Antheunis en Simon De Langhe. Maar niet veel later zet Sammy Claes de 2-2 en de 2-3 op het bord. Meteen ook de stand na het eerste kwart. In het tweede kwart hangt Nathan Delmeiren de bordjes gelijk. De bezoekers slaan dan een eerste kloofje. Van der Jeugt, Claes en Mannaerts brengen de score op 3-6. Jonas Trenson mildert tot 4-6, maar op 10 seconden van het einde herstelt William Wittevrongel de driepuntenkloof. 4-7 halfweg. Wittevrongel opent ook in het derde kwart de score, maar Trenson prikt tegen. Dan is het wachten tot 6 seconden van het einde. Dan scoort Delmeiren de 6-8. In het laatste kwart diept Mechelen zijn voorsprong weer uit. Van der Jeugt en Junior Verschuren brengen Mechelen op 6-10. Wittevrongel benut op 2 minuten van het einde nog een man meer, 6-11. Het slotakkoord is voor Tuur Damman. Hij zet de 7-11 eindstand op het bord. Mechelen lijkt zich herpakt te hebben na de slechte seizoenstart met 5 overwinningen uit 6 wedstrijden.
De derde kwartfinale op zaterdag vond plaats in LAGO Rozebroeken. Kortrijk ontving La Louvière. Les Loups namen de beste start en scoorden al snel de 0-1, via Robin Leemans. Tegen het einde van het eerste kwart herstelt Kortrijk de achterstand. Jan Nel zet een penalty om en Florin Iordan benut een man meer. 2-1 na het eerste kwart. In de tweede periode is het opnieuw La Louvière dat de beste start neemt. Via Tanguy Godeau, Logan Vitrant en Valentin Bouillon lopen Les Loups uit tot 2-4. Florin Iordan scoort de 3-4, maar Joachim Flament prikt de 3-5 tegen. Op slag van rust scoort Michiel D’hooghe de aansluitingstreffer, 4-5. In het derde kwart opent Chavepeyer de score (4-6), maar dan neemt Kortrijk de match in handen. Dessein, Van der Linden en Nel zorgen voor de 7-6 voorsprong bij het ingaan van de laatste periode. In die laatste periode valt al snel de gelijkmaker, via Tanguy Godeau. Beide ploegen proberen nog iets te forceren met een time out, maar het mag niet baten. Penalty’s moesten beslissing brengen. Na een spannende shoot-out haalde Kortrijk het met 13-12 (6-5).
Op zondagavond stond de laatste kwartfinale op het programma. Het was een duel tussen de 2 overgebleven tweedeklassers, Neptunus Aalst en KGZV. Na een korte studieronde opent Sepp Verstraeten de score voor Aalst. Even later zet Tanguy De Vrieze de gelijkmaker op het bord, maar bij een dubbele man-meer komt Aalst op 2-1, via Siebe Herregodts. Op 5 seconden van het einde zet Tanguy De Vrieze met zijn 2de van de avond de 2-2 op het bord. In het tweede kwart schakelt GZV een tandje hoger. Lieven Lagast zet een penalty om. Van op man meer scoort De Paepe de 2-4 en Dries Baudonck zorgt met een afstandsschot voor de 2-5-ruststand. Baudonck opent ook de score in het derde kwart. Via Lagast en opnieuw Baudonck loopt GZV uit tot 2-8. In het laatste kwart nadert Aalst tot 4-8, via doelpunten van Van Noppen en Persoons. De Vrieze en Lagast zetten opnieuw de zespuntenkloof op het bord. Nadien scoort Aalst nog drie keer, GZV nog één keer. Eindstand 8-11. GZV plaatst zich dus als laatste voor de halve finale en gaat in februari mee in de trommel met Antwerpen, Mechelen en Kortrijk
In de vaderlandse waterpolocompetities gaan de terugrondes van start. Hoog tijd voor een round up van de heenronde en een vooruitblik op de eerste speeldag van de terugronde.
In de Superliga voert Moeskroen het klassement aan Les Hurlus boekten dit weekend hun 7de overwinning van het seizoen en staan hierdoor met het maximum van de punten op plaats 1. Kortrijk volgt al op 6 punten. De West-vlamingen verloren op speeldag 1 in Moeskroen en afgelopen weekend in Mechelen. Daartussen werd er 5 keer op rij gewonnen. Landskampioen Antwerpen speelde alleen nog maar wedstrijden op verplaatsing. Daaruit haalde het 12 punten. De Sinjoren hebben wel nog een wedstrijd te goed, namelijk op La Louvière. Mechelen en Eeklo bekleden momenteel samen de 4de plaats. Mechelen startte het seizoen met 0 op 9, maar pakte daarna wel een mooie 9 op 12. Promovendus Eeklo toonde al dat het in de hoogste afdeling thuishoort. De Meetjeslanders verloren nipt van Antwerpen en maakten het ook Moeskroen knap lastig. Daarnaast wonnen ze bijvoorbeeld ook in Doornik. La Louvière en Doornik tellen elk 7 punten na 7 wedstrijden. Beide ploegen kenden een moeizame start van het seizoen en willen dat in de terugronde rechtzetten. Hekkensluiter Brussels telt momenteel nog 0 punten.
Op de eerste speeldag van de terugronde trekt leider Moeskroen naar LAGO Rozebroeken voor hun wedstrijd tegen KWK. LAGO Rozebroeken is tijdelijk de thuisbasis van Kortrijk wegens de bouw van een nieuw zwembad. Kampioen Antwerpen ontvangt Eeklo in de eerste wedstrijd in het herstelde Wezenbergbad. Door aanhoudende renovatiewerken kon Antwerpen dus nog geen thuiswedstrijden spelen dit seizoen. Tot slot ontvangt hekkensluiter Brussels de ploeg uit Doornik. Mechelen en La Louvière zijn by.
In de damescompetitie staat kampioen en bekerwinnaar GZV aan de leiding met 18 op 18. In het eerste onderlinge duel met concurrent MZV trok GZV aan het langste eind met 12-9. MZV bezet de 2de plaats met 12 op 15 en nog een match te goed. Op de 3de plaats vinden we Calypso en Leuven met elk 9 punten. Antwerpen staat 5de met 6 op 15. Aalst en La Louvière hebben elk 1 punt. Ze speelden in een onderling duel 7-7 gelijk.
Op vrijdag trekken de dames van Aalst naar Antwerpen. La Louvière ontvangt leider GZV op zaterdagavond. Op zondag sluiten Leuven Aqua en MZV de speeldag af. Calypso is by komend weekend.
In tweede klasse hebben we met GZV ook een leider die nog niet verloor. GZV boekte 8 overwinningen en speelde éénmaal gelijk, namelijk tegen Leuven. Eerste achtervolgers Oostende en Wase volgen op respectievelijk 1 en 4 punten. Oostende leed zijn voorlopig enige nederlaag tegen GZV. Wase verloor in Oostende en afgelopen weekend thuis tegen Gent. De nummer 4 in het klassement, Tielt, volgt al op 7 punten van Wase. De West-Vlamingen kenden een wisselvallige heenronde en willen dat ongetwijfeld goedmaken. Promovendus Waregem staat momenteel op de 5de plaats met 11 op 27. Dit is onder meer te danken aan een nipte overwinning tegen Leuven en gelijke spelen tegen Tielt en Aalst. Antwerpen B en Leuven staan gedeeld 6de met 10 op 27. Leuven pakte thuis 9 op 9, maar kon in 6 wedstrijden op verplaatsing nog maar 1 punt pakken. Calypso miste zijn seizoensstart compleet. Het verloor zijn eerste 5 wedstrijden, waaronder de match in Mons. Nadien konden de Brusselaars tweemaal winnen, maar verloren dan opnieuw tweemaal. Dat opgeteld leidt tot een 6 op 27. Ook Aalst kent een minder seizoen. De Ajuinen trekken, na het vertrek van enkele sterkhouders, volop de kaart van de jeugd en betalen daar leergeld voor. De mannen van coach De Bolster hebben voorlopig 5 op 27. Dat is 1 puntje meer dan hekkensluiter Mons. Mons kon enkel nog maar winnen van Calypso en ging een puntje halen bij Aalst.
De terugronde start met een wedstrijd tussen Antwerpen B en Oostende. Op zaterdag trekt leider Gent naar Aalst, Tielt ontvangt Wase en Waregem ontvangt Mons. Calypso krijgt het bezoek van Leuven.
Ook in de derde afdeling is de leider nog ongeslagen. Hasselt A verloor enkel punten in de thuismatch tegen Strombeek en won dus de 8 overige wedstrijden. Goed voor een 25 op 27. Dat zijn 4 punten meer dan eerste achtervolger VZ Gent. De Stroppen startten het seizoen met een 0 op 6, maar herpakten zich met een 21 op 21. Op plaats 3 vinden we Merksem. De Antwerpenaren verloren ook nog maar tweemaal dit seizoen, maar speelden wel een match minder. Mits winst in hun wedstrijd tegen Strombeek, komen ze dus naast VZG op plaats 2. Datzelfde Strombeek bekleedt de 4de plaats met 15 punten. Op plaats 5 staan Roeselare en La Louvière B met elk 13 punten. Roeselare herpakte zich na een 1 op 12, La Louvière zakte dan weer wat terug na een 7 op 12. Seraing staat 7de met 10 punten. De Luikenaars konden nog maar eenmaal winnen op verplaatsing, op bezoek bij promovendus Ixelles. De Brusselaars staan met 7 op 27 op plaats 8. Helios bezet plaats 9 met 6 op 27. Eupen staat momenteel puntenloos laatste.
Komend weekend ontvangt promovendus Ixelles de ploeg van Strombeek. Helios treft Seraing. Roeselare speelt een thuiswedstrijd tegen Merksem. Eupen kijkt La Louvière B in de ogen. De nummers 1 en 2, Hasselt A en VZG, komen niet in actie dit weekend.
Vierde klasse en ook hier hebben we een ongeslagen leider. Brugge won tot nu toe al zijn wedstrijden, goed voor een 21 op 21. Moeskroen B volgt op 2 punten, maar speelde wel een wedstrijd meer. Op de 3de plaats staan Hasselt B en Ciney. Hasselt B startte het seizoen met 1 op 9, maar pakte daarna 12 op 12 waardoor het nu op plaats 3 staat. Ciney presteert wisselvallig. Eerst enkele overwinningen, dan een paar mindere wedstrijden en nu weer 6 op 6 gepakt. Oostende B staat 5de met 10 op 21, gevolgd door Genk en Mechelen B met elk 9 punten. Ensival staat op plaats 8 met 8 punten. Dendermonde haalde al 7 punten uit 8 wedstrijden. Soignies en Blankenberge konden elk nog maar eenmaal winnen dit seizoen. Soignies kreeg een forfaitoverwinning cadeau van Blankenberge. Blankenberge won op zijn beurt het burenduel met Oostende B.
Komend weekend ontvangt Mechelen B Hasselt B. Dendermonde trekt naar Ciney. Ensival speelt tegen Genk en kan dus over de Limburgers springen in het klassement. Soignies ontvangt Blankenberge en Moeskroen B en Oostende B spelen de laatste wedstrijd van deze speeldag. Leider Brugge komt niet in actie.
In de Superliga staat dit weekend de topper tussen Moeskroen en Doornik op het programma. Moeskroen won tot nu toe al zijn wedstrijden en heeft zo 9 op 9. Doornik begon het seizoen met een 7 op 12 en springt bij winst dus over Les Dauphins naar plaats 2. Het wordt ongetwijfeld een speciale match voor Charly Ben Romdhane en Rostyslav Naumchyk. Beide spelers maakten afgelopen zomer de overstap van CNT naar RDM.
Landskampioen Antwerpen ontvangt zaterdagavond La Louvière. Antwerpen won zijn eerste 2 wedstrijden, maar leed vorige wedstrijd een nipte nederlaag tegen Kortrijk. De mannen van coach Dams willen deze misstap ongetwijfeld rechtzetten tegen Les Loups en zo een 9 op 12 boeken. La Louvière kon dit seizoen nog geen punten pakken op verplaatsing. Er werd verloren in Moeskroen en in Eeklo. Kan La Louvière een einde maken aan deze negatieve reeks of pakt Antwerpen in zijn eerste thuismatch onmiddellijk de overwinning?
De laatste match in de Superliga wordt een duel tussen Mechelen en promovendus Eeklo. Mechelen is na 3 wedstrijden nog steeds puntenloos. Er waren nipte nederlagen in Doornik en in La Louvière en de zware thuisnederlaag is ongetwijfeld hard aangekomen bij de spelers van coach Lugovic. De Maneblussers zullen voor eigen volk ongetwijfeld iets willen rechtzetten. Tegenstander Eeklo boekte op de vorige speeldag zijn eerste thuisoverwinning, tegen La Louvière. Dat resulteert in een 6 op 12. Een competitiestart waar ze in Eeklo voor zouden tekenen, met wedstrijden tegen Kortrijk en Antwerpen al achter de rug.
In de damescompetitie staan er dit weekend 2 wedstrijden gepland. De dames van MZV nemen het op tegen Antwerpen. Bij winst komt MZV naast GZV aan de leiding in het klassement. Op zaterdagavond spelen de dames van Aalst een thuiswedstrijd tegen La Louvière.
In tweede klasse staat dit weekend de topper tussen de Gentse en Oostende op het programma. De Gentse verloor op de vorige speeldag zijn eerste punten (13-13) tegen Leuven, terwijl Oostende zijn 5de thuisoverwinning op een rij boekte. Hun eerste verplaatsing van het seizoen is dus direct een stevige. Het is overigens de enige verplaatsing in de heenronde voor ROSC. Nummer 4 in de stand, Waregem, ontvangt Antwerpen B. De West-Vlamingen kennen met 7 op 15 een aardige competitiestart en willen die positieve flow zeker doortrekken. Tielt ontvangt Leuven. Beide ploegen tellen ook 7 punten uit 5 wedstrijden en willen maar al te graag een overwinning boeken om de voeling met de top niet te verliezen. Aalst trekt op zaterdag naar hekkensluiter Calypso. De mannen van coach De Bolster geven zichzelf bij een overwinning wat meer ademruimte onderin het klassement. Hetzelfde geldt voor Mons, dat wel het bezoek krijgt van Wase, nummer 3 in het klassement.
In derde klasse trekt VZ Gent naar Ixelles. VZG verloor zijn eerste 2 matchen maar pakt 9 op 9 in zijn laatste 3 wedstrijden. Die goede flow zullen ze ongetwijfeld willen doortrekken. Ook Strombeek startte het seizoen met 9 op 15 en trekt op vrijdag naar Helios. Op zaterdag speelt de tweede in de stand, Merksem, een thuismatch tegen hekkensluiter Eupen. Seraing staat voor een verre verplaatsing naar Roeselare. Op zondag verdedigt Hasselt A zijn leidersplaats in een wedstrijd tegen La Louvière B.
In vierde klasse krijgen we een West-Vlaams duel tussen Blankenberge en leider Brugge. Moeskroen B krijgt op zaterdagavond het bezoek van Soignies. Ciney trekt naar Oostende B. Bij een overwinning springt Ciney naar plaats 2 in het klassement. Mechelen B ontvangt Ensival. Hekkensluiter Hasselt B gaat tegen Dendermonde op zoek naar een eerste driepunter van het seizoen. Co-leider Genk is by dit weekend.
When the Covid pandemic hit Europe in 2020, all competitions were postponed or cancelled. In Belgium, like in a lot of countries, the federation decided eventually to cancel the competition completely and not to appoint any winner. Antwerp (AZSC) was steamrolling through the competition in the 2019-2020 season, and it looked like there was no opponent that year who would be able to match their level. Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t finish their great season.
2020-2021 started with a lot of doubt and uncertainty. The Belgian federation and clubs tried to start with the new season, but in the end, it was once again cancelled due to the Covid pandemic, and the strict measures imposed by the Belgian government.
Finally, 2021-2022 promises a lot of action again in Belgium and for now it looks like everything will proceed as normal. Most clubs were able to keep their team roster and are preparing to start again with competition on the last weekend of September or early october. Nevertheless, a lot of transfers happened in the last couple of months. Below we give a small summary of the incoming and outgoing transfers in the Belgian first division.
Antwerp (AZSC)
As mentioned before, Antwerp had a very good season in 2019-2020, but unfortunately couldn’t finish their it with a price. Since then, there have been a lot of changes on the team. The biggest loss for Antwerp was without a doubt their center forward, Toni Opacak. After the 2019 season, Toni left the club for the Croatian club VK Osijek. Another great miss will be one of their key players, Greg Heirman who retired.
For the upcoming season AZSC invested in a lot of young talent, Pieter-Jan Dhooghe (WZK) joined the team together with Luka Pannecoecke (ROSC), both Belgian youth internationals of the U19’s squad. Head coach Jorn Dams stepped down and was replaced with a new Spanish coach, Luis Ramón Lalinde Sanches.

Tournai (CNT)
Club Natation de Tournai who have been regular contestants for the title and/or Belgian cup in the last couple of years will probably know a more difficult season in 2021. The club near the French border are investing into new and upcoming youth players.
3 key players left the club or retired. Kevin Sterling returned to France, after only a single game played in the 2020 season due to Covid. The strong center forward went back to his former club of CN Noisy le sec. Furthermore, Gregory Moronval and Nicolas Golejewski retired. Tournai was able to convince 2 young talents (only 17 years old) to join them. Hector Droulez joined the club again after playing in France for ENT Tourcoing’s youth selections and Maël Leseney who comes from Douai.

The last couple of years Kortrijk has been a steady team in the top 5 of the Belgian competition with very few transfers. The 2021 season is no difference with no new players joining or leaving the club.
La Louviere (ENL)
ENL started the 2020 season with a new head Coach Kristjan Sundic, but never got the chance to see what the Croatian coach could bring to the team. Kristjan Sundic now took on a new challenge as assistant coach for the Belgian national team. He got replaced by Kevin Chavepeyer, former player of La Louviere who retired after the last (Covid) season.

Mechelen has been busy on the transfer market in Belgium as well. Last year they already had a couple of new younger players added to their team roster, but also experience with a talented Croatian and former player of Jug Dubrovnic, Nikola Pavlicevic. Now they can add 3 more experienced players. Vladyslav Dulin (23) coming back to his former club after playing 3 years in Stade de Reims (FR), Simon Van der Jeugt (24) who played for 2 years with Polar Bears Ede and Sammy Claes the 34 old captain of the national team who also played in the Dutch league last season with PSV.

Moeskroen (RDM)
RDM is the last official Belgian champion (2018-2019), which was their 10th title in the club’s history. In the last 10 years Moeskroen won the competition 6 times, so we can expect a lot of them again for the coming season.
Last season RDM had some great arrivals but weren’t able to keep them after 1 year without competition. Since then, Matthieu Almuzara decided to retire and Christos Papapostolou left the club again for a different adventure.
However, Mouscron was able to make all the necessary arrangements and complete the process for Iranian refugee Amir Dehdari to be eligible to play. A 28-year-old lefthander who played for the Iranian national team.
Furthermore, RDM convinced some younger players to join the squad. 21-year-old Rodrigo Silva, Guillaume Wartelle-Hugues, a 22-year-old goalkeeper and 20-year-old Nathan Quoirez.

The 2020 season was supposed to be their reappearance in the first division after 13 years, unfortunately Ostend never really had the chance of proving themselves. For the 2021 season ROSC lost one of their young talents, Luka Panncoucke (18), to AZSC Antwerp. Luka will try to earn his place with the 2018 Belgian champion. As the newest member of the Superleague Ostend will probably have a tough season with one of the youngest squads of the competition.

Tielt (TZK)
TZK had been a steady newcomer in the Super league the last couple of years. Working slowly but surely towards a better position in the competition, but still battling every year to stay in the highest league. Luckily, one of their experienced players, Mick Gadeyne came back from retirement to help the team and especially the youngsters towards their goals this season.

A difficult first task for MZV on their first gameday in the Olympic swimming pool Wezenberg. Antwerp with the home advantage and supporters in the stands again, had an explosive start. Captain Niels Bus scoring the 3-0, lead the team to a 5-1 score after the first quarter. Jonas Trenson was able to take the 0 of the board for MZV. The second quarter was nearly a copy of the first, Antwerp kept widening the gap from 5-1 to 8-2. Niels Bus and youngster Pieter-Jan D’hooghe scoring their 2nd of the day. This quarter it was Tuur Damman who was able to find the net again for MZV.
The 3rd quarter looked promising for a moment for MZV. Tuur Damman scored his 2nd of the day for 8-3 and although Jay Van Hoey scored his 2nd for AZSC as wel, it was Michiel Heynssens who brought MZV a little closer again with 9-4. Remarkable, because Michiel usually is the goalie for MZV. But Antwerp never gave the momentum back to MZV and continued to control the game towards the end of the 3rd quarter, finishing 12-4. The last quarter was just more of the same. Worth to mention, also 19yo Luka Pannecoucke, who made his debut in the Super league, also made his first goals for Antwerp.

Despite quite some players leaving the team, WZK put in a more than decent effort, trailing ROSC with only one goal after the first quarter (2-3). The second quarter Oostende shifted a gear or two higher, 3-8 at half time. The second half of the game the difference between both teams was much smaller, resulting in 2-3 in the third quarter and 2-2 in the final one. End standing was 7-13

Mouscron started furious, scoring 4 goals in the first quarter, where ENL wasn’t able to score. After three minutes in the second quarter, the game seemed already over, as Mouscron was leading with 7-0. Halfway the second half, ENL was able to score the first one, quickly followed by a second one. 8 seconds before half time Amir Dehdari scored the 8-2. In the third quarter both teams managed to score 2 goals. The last quarter was for Moucron again, with 4-2, resulting in the 14-6 final standing.
