KWK Kortrijk – CNT Tournai This game would determine the leader of the competition after 5 rounds. CNT was leading with the maximum of points, Kortrijk could become at the same height, although they played one game less. The game was also a battle between the top 3 in the goal scorers standing. It was Mael Leseney, the current top scorer of CNT who opened the score. The equalizer followed only 18 seconds later: a penalty scored by Michiel D’hooghe. With 49 seconds to play, Jan Nel netted the 2-1. Michiel D’hooghe scored his second on of the evening for 3-1. Hector Droulez made sure CNT was staying in the game. Last quarter was a 0-6 standing for Antwerp, resulting in a hard 4-25 result. Worth noticing is that 10 out of 13 players managed to score for KAZSC. The first 3 quarters Mechelen made no mistakes in defense and played a very well controlled game in offence. Resulting in a 0-15. The last quarter Leuven was finally able to break through a couple times, finishing the game with a score of 4-21. Ostend was able to take the lead in the beginning of the first quarter, but La Louvière always found an answer to come back. The second quarter it was ENL with the initiative, but twice their lead wasn’t enough to break ROSC. The 3^rd quarter however, the wolves from La Louvière were finally able to get the lead they were looking for thanks to Numa Matthys and Logan Vitrant. Ostend Didn’t give in and kept on battling until the very. It wasn’t enough unfortunately, but a good result for the debuting team.

Super League third round: Kortrijk stays leader, Mouscron beats Mechelen. Both Kortrijk and Tournai won their third-round game, resulting in keeping the maximum of 9 points. Antwerpen had an easy night against Tielt with a 9-20 win and La Louvière was able to book their second win with an 8-14 victory against Leuven. The top game was Mouscron-Mechelen, where two title contestants were looking each other in the eyes. It ended in a 10-8 victory for the home team. Read all about it below! ROSC Oostende – KWK Kortrijk Kortrijk opened a 0-2 lead, but Oostende came back to 2-3. 18 seconds before the end of the first quarter, current top scorer Niels Van der Linden netted the 2-4. Two quick goals of Michiel D’hooghe, who also scored the 0-1 resulted in a 2-6 lead. The two top scorers of the Super League managed 15 goals each so far. Kortrijk managed 4 more goals in the second quarter, Oostende netted two, resulting in 4-10 halfway. Oostende didn’t manage to score in the second half of the game. Pieterjan D’hooghe scored the 3-5 with only 30 seconds left. In the second quarter Antwerpen quickly extended their lead with 3 goals. The 4-8 was scored by who else than Mike. If there was any doubt left of who would win the game, KAZSC took it away in the third quarter with a 2-7 standing. Both teams are contestants for the title and were looking to stay a top undefeated. The game started rather disastrous for Mechelen, looking at a 3-goal lead for RDM after the first quarter. In the beginning of the 2^nd quarter was Mechelen still unable to respond to the counter plays from Mouscron. At a certain moment, Mouscron had a 7-1 lead over Mechelen and the game looked like it was already over. By the end of the 2^nd quarter Mechelen finally started to find their rhythm and were able to come back to 7-3. That come back was pushed through in the 3^rd quarter as well, but every time Mechelen found the net for a 2 goal difference, Mouscron was able to score again to keep the 3 goal lead. In the last quarter it looked like Mechelen was gaining the upper hand and got the opportunities to go for the equalizer, but mistakes on crucial moments in front of goal ensured the victory for RDM and a 10-8 final score.

In the last quarter Leuven still didn’t give in and halfway through, Lukas dekeyser was able to close the gap again with his 3^rd goal of the evening. 8-9.   The second round had some promising fixture, with Antwerpen facing Mouscron and Mechelen playing their first game of the new season against Eeklo. Kortrijk would be looking to keep the maximum of points facing Wase while La louvière played their first home game against Tielt. It was a slow start of the game, with Jan Nel scoring the first goal halfway the first quarter, quickly equalized by Bob D’eer. After that, KWK shifted not one, but two gears higher and never looked back. In the last three minutes of the first quarter, KWK managed to score four more goals, resulting in a 5-1 lead. After that, Michiel D’hooghe and Niels Van der Linden were battling out who would be at the top of the goal scorer table. Both players managed 6 goals in the first game against Leuven. Michiel scored another 6 goals against Wase, Niels netted 8, resulting in being the current leader with a total of 14 goals. Logan Vitrant and Numa Matthys scored quickly, resulting in a 2-0 lead after two minutes. After that, there was not much action, Numa scored the 3-0 and Tielt scored their first goal with only 5 seconds to spare. Both teams scored quickly in the beginning of the second quarter. The last minute before half time was the big Tanguy Godeau show, scoring 3 goals in just over a minute. ENL and TZK were both able to net two goals in the third quarter, resulting in a 9-4 stand after three times. A lot of faults were committed in the fourth quarter. Julien Vreux found the net twice, resulting in the 11-4 final standing. But they never got any closer than a 3 goal difference (8-5). In the second half Mechelen continued to widen the gap and eventually won relatively easy. Both teams had serious ambitions at the beginning of the season, and this was the first real test for both teams. In a full Wezenberg stadium both teams struggled to score goals. Antwerp controlled the game for 3 quarters and had a lead of 3 goals (5-2) halfway the 3rd. Mostly thanks to man of the match and goalie, Dries Stoot, who was able to block 2 penalties. The drama unfolded in the last quarter, where Mouscron got back in the game and Alexander Grman scored the 5-6 at 23 seconds from the end. AZSC had to play all or nothing at this point and went in with the goalie as an extra man. Elko Van den Broucke was the free man, but his first shot was blocked by the goalkeeper. Now with only 9 seconds left on the clock and still with a 7 on 6 situation, the corner ball was played again to Elko, and this time the home crowd exploded as he scored the 6-6. When the Covid pandemic hit Europe in 2020, all competitions were postponed or cancelled. In Belgium, like in a lot of countries, the federation decided eventually to cancel the competition completely and not to appoint any winner. Antwerp (AZSC) was steamrolling through the competition in the 2019-2020 season, and it looked like there was no opponent that year who would be able to match their level. Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t finish their great season. 2020-2021 started with a lot of doubt and uncertainty. The Belgian federation and clubs tried to start with the new season, but in the end, it was once again cancelled due to the Covid pandemic, and the strict measures imposed by the Belgian government. Finally, 2021-2022 promises a lot of action again in Belgium and for now it looks like everything will proceed as normal. Most clubs were able to keep their team roster and are preparing to start again with competition on the last weekend of September or early october. Nevertheless, a lot of transfers happened in the last couple of months. Below we give a small summary of the incoming and outgoing transfers in the Belgian first division. Antwerp (AZSC) As mentioned before, Antwerp had a very good season in 2019-2020, but unfortunately couldn’t finish their it with a price. Since then, there have been a lot of changes on the team. The biggest loss for Antwerp was without a doubt their center forward, Toni Opacak. After the 2019 season, Toni left the club for the Croatian club VK Osijek. Another great miss will be one of their key players, Greg Heirman who retired. For the upcoming season AZSC invested in a lot of young talent, Pieter-Jan Dhooghe (WZK) joined the team together with Luka Pannecoecke (ROSC), both Belgian youth internationals of the U19’s squad. Head coach Jorn Dams stepped down and was replaced with a new Spanish coach, Luis Ramón Lalinde Sanches. The 2021 season is no difference with no new players joining or leaving the club. La Louviere (ENL) ENL started the 2020 season with a new head Coach Kristjan Sundic, but never got the chance to see what the Croatian coach could bring to the team. Kristjan Sundic now took on a new challenge as assistant coach for the Belgian national team. He got replaced by Kevin Chavepeyer, former player of La Louviere who retired after the last (Covid) season. No other Transfers noted for ENL. Vladyslav Dulin (23) coming back to his former club after playing 3 years in Stade de Reims (FR), Simon Van der Jeugt (24) who played for 2 years with Polar Bears Ede and Sammy Claes the 34 old captain of the national team who also played in the Dutch league last season with PSV. In the last 10 years Moeskroen won the competition 6 times, so we can expect a lot of them again for the coming season. Last season RDM had some great arrivals but weren’t able to keep them after 1 year without competition. Since then, Matthieu Almuzara decided to retire and Christos Papapostolou left the club again for a different adventure. However, Mouscron was able to make all the necessary arrangements and complete the process for Iranian refugee Amir Dehdari to be eligible to play. A 28-year-old lefthander who played for the Iranian national team. Antwerp with the home advantage and supporters in the stands again, had an explosive start. Captain Niels Bus scoring the 3-0, lead the team to a 5-1 score after the first quarter. Jonas Trenson was able to take the 0 of the board for MZV. The second quarter was nearly a copy of the first, Antwerp kept widening the gap from 5-1 to 8-2. Niels Bus and youngster Pieter-Jan D’hooghe scoring their 2^nd of the day. This quarter it was Tuur Damman who was able to find the net again for MZV. The 3^rd quarter looked promising for a moment for MZV. Tuur Damman scored his 2^nd of the day for 8-3 and although Jay Van Hoey scored his 2^nd for AZSC as wel, it was Michiel Heynssens who brought MZV a little closer again with 9-4. Remarkable, because Michiel usually is the goalie for MZV. But Antwerp never gave the momentum back to MZV and continued to control the game towards the end of the 3^rd quarter, finishing 12-4. The last quarter was just more of the same. In the third quarter both teams managed to score 2 goals. Le vendredi 27 mars, le gouvernement fédéral a pris la décision de prolonger d’au moins deux semaines les mesures prises contre la propagation du Coronavirus, avec une prolongation probable de deux semaines supplémentaires. En conséquence, la Commission Sportive water-polo est contrainte d’annuler définitivement la suite du championnat de Belgique. En effet, la santé des joueurs, des entraîneurs, des arbitres, des officiels et des supporters est actuellement notre priorité numéro un.

Concrètement, cela signifie qu’il n’y aura plus de compétitions cette saison. Par conséquent, aucun champion ne sera déclaré et aucune équipe ne sera promue ou reléguée. Pour toutes les équipes seniors, la composition des divisions, pour la saison 2020-2021, sera identique à celle actuelle. Si certaines équipes ont remarqué au cours de la saison que le niveau de leur division actuelle est trop élevé ou trop bas, elles peuvent soumettre une demande de changement de division à la Commission Sportive. Attention : un accord doit être trouvé entre les clubs concernés sur une base entièrement volontaire. La Commission Sportive n’obligera aucun club à être relégué ou être promu et n’autorisera aucune exception à la formule de compétition à 10 équipes par division.

Concernant les finales de coupe, il est envisagé de les programmer au début de la nouvelle compétition, en fonction de la manière dont les directives concernant l’organisation des événements seront traitées dans les mois à venir.

En ce qui concerne la participation aux coupes européennes, nous demanderons conseil à la LEN. En fonction de cet avis, la Commission Sportive engagera un dialogue avec les clubs qui souhaitent participer aux Coupes d’Europe.

Enfin, nous recommandons de suivre toutes les directives gouvernementales. Plus vite nous pourrons contenir ce virus, plus vite nous pourrons retourner à notre vie (polo) normale.
